I can’t help but look up every time she walks past. It’s instinctive. Trained like Pavlov’s dogs, whenever I hear the tapping of her heels approaching, my head lifts up from my work. She’ll never notice me; I’m beneath her notice, no matter what I do. She’s the boss, not just of this department, but the whole damn company, and she doesn’t need someone like me in her life.
Doesn’t stop me from dreaming though, does it? She can’t see inside my head, so as long as I keep my ... Read more

My eyes still closed, I reach out for you and find that, once again, you’re not there beside me. I don’t even know why I’m surprised, since you’re never there. Living so far apart, what else am I supposed to expect, after all? But still, it’s a reflex now, I couldn’t stop it if I tried.
We talk, but it just isn’t the same. I don’t tell you half of the things I should, like the way that shivers run down my back every time I hear your voice, or ... Read more

My bedroom does not have airconditioning.
And while it has big windows on two sides those windows face funny when it comes to the summer wind, which blows differently from the winter wind.
And July and August are the hottest months on this island of Rhodes (Greece) with night tempratures easily hovering around and above 35 degrees Celsius (90+ Farenheit), which makes my bedroom simply too hot to sleep in.
There are two roofs adjoining my bedroom. We (my cats and I) call them "roof terraces". And one evening this ... Read more

Murray is twenty three, studying medicine at university and in love with his best friend. He has loved Alex since they met in their first year and now that they live together, well, it’s not something Murray sees changing in the foreseeable future.
Alex doesn’t know, of course.
And it will stay that way.
As usual, they go out drinking on Friday. Murray reckons there isn’t a bar in Bath they’ve not explored by now, but that doesn’t stop Alex from dragging him around the city for hours trying to ... Read more

There is a hole in the center of the world, meant for all the broken hearts of young lovers to compile, meld, and remold. They pour into it day after day, every hour, every minute, every second. Young lovers are the happiest and the most heartbroken of them all because love is so fleeting when it's new and unused. For some, it's always that way, deep and intense and so harsh it breaks them; for others, it fades and becomes something softer and more acceptable.
But these hearts mix and ... Read more

I am currently in a slight trance thanks to my neighbour waking me up (and my friend who lives across the road from me and no doubt the entire street including residents from the old people’s home opposite) because he was having a drunken argument in our shared stairway with a girl with the most high-pitched horrendous voice I’ve ever heard and a group of other people at 2am.
Luckily if all goes well I should be moving into a house in just over six weeks, so seeing as I’ve ... Read more

He only comes to her when it’s dark. He’s a shadow on the floor, a dim and broken light in the corridor and a dark, shapeless figure hovering outside the front door of her apartment. She knows that he is there even before he rings the door bell. She doesn’t know if that is because there is a routine to his visits, if his footsteps are distinct or whether she can simply sense him, waiting outside and delaying the moment that he finally puts his finger to the button and ... I have terrible taste in men, in fact I think I purposely go for the ones I’m well aware I will never have any sort of actual proper relationship with. I do this out of fear, I’m terrified of commitment, of settling down with one person and becoming trapped in an unhappy relationship. The reason I’m scared is because I was in one for four-years with a man that made me give-up college, my friends, any sort of social life and then tried his best to knock down my self-confidence ... Their first date had been in a romantic French restaurant with the kind of view that would be forever remembered. He had been attentive and kind, holding her hand over their dessert and expensive bottle of wine and she found herself blushing like a schoolgirl under the kind stare of his deep brown eyes. She was a self assured, thirty something career woman yet he made her heart flutter like she was a shy and inexperienced little girl.
When the date was over he paid the bill without pause or ... Read more

The one thing that’s still capable of sending me on the most terrifyingly horrendous flashbacks is sports day.
This week it was my son’s first sports day, which took place on a field with one-hundred-and-seventy children aged five to seven. It took them over half-an-hour to get through all the running races and was possibly the most boring thing I’ve ever been made to endure. Finally Luke got to run but they put him closest to the crowd and as a daydreamer like me he got distracted half way through ... Read more
